IPL new rules are enforced from the new season. The 16th season will provide a festive atmosphere for cricket fans for almost two months. Like the last season, ten teams are competing for the most coveted prize in T20 franchise cricket this time.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made many changes in the new season. It includes reviews for wide and no-balls, fielding regulations in power plays, and the final team announcement after the toss. Now let us look at the Indian Premier League (IPL) new rules in detail.

IPL New Rules 2023: Changes in Group Stage Matches

A total of 10 teams are competing in the IPL. Accordingly, 10 teams are divided into two groups with 5 teams in each group.

  • In the league stage, a team will play one match each against the 4 teams in its group. (4) And the team will play two matches against the 5 teams in the other group. (10) So, each team will play 14 matches in the league stage.
  • Previously, it was based on rank system completely. Now, this rule made the competition balanced and fair.

IPL New Rules: Final Team Selection after Toss

In all the IPL seasons (before 2023), the final playing 11 of a team was announced before the toss. It was customary to confirm these details. However, the BCCI allows the franchises to choose the final squad after the toss from 2023 IPL. This approach will benefit both teams equally, as both teams know the pitch conditions and pick the players accordingly.

Five-run Penalty

The BCCI has also introduced a rule to penalize the fielding team five runs if the fielders or the wicketkeeper make an unfair movement during delivery. Moreover, the ball will be considered a dead ball. Also, if the stipulated 20 overs are not completed within the allotted time, only four players will be allowed outside the circle instead of five.

Review for Wide & No Balls

The Decision Review System (DRS) only reviews decisions for dismissals in a match. However, in IPL this season, teams can review wide and no-balls. The BCCI implemented the wide and no-ball review rule in the recently concluded Women’s Premier League. The new rule will help reduce umpiring errors, which could affect the game’s outcome.

Impact Player

Before the start of the IPL, there was a lot of controversies and queries about the Impact Player Rule. Everyone feels that this will make the game very interesting. Now let’s look into details of the new impact player rule.

  • The franchise has the option to select four substitute players.
  • Out of those 4 substitute players, one can be played as an impact player in the final playing 11. This player is called an impact player.
  • However, if there are four foreign players in the playing 11, then only an Indian cricketer should be selected as an impact player.
  • If there are three foreign players, then a foreign cricketer can be selected as an impact player. The main purpose of this is that there should be only four foreign players in the final squad of 11.

An impact player may be substituted as per match conditions. If a batsman is required while chasing, a batsman can come in the place of a bowler. If a spin bowler is desired while bowling, a bowler can be taken in the place of a batsman.

However, a player who has left the field for an impact player once will not be allowed to play in the match again.

Matches at Home Grounds & Away Grounds

This time all the matches are being held at home and away grounds. However, whether this is new or not, matches are being held in all the country’s major cities after almost three years. The entire 2020 IPL was held in Dubai due to Corona.

Also, the 2021 season was held half in Dubai and half in India. When the 2022 IPL was held in India, only Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad and Kolkata were the host cities. This time, in 2023, the matches will be held in the cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Mohali, Lucknow, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Guwahati and Dharamsala.

Final Thoughts

These IPL new rules will have a huge impact on the game. Particularly, the Impact Player Rule will be a crucial factor. Let’s wait and see how this IPL unravels the mystery of T20 cricket.
