Let’s look at the impressive stats of Virat Kohli in the IPL and how his runs have contributed to the success of RCB.

Virat Kohli IPL Runs – Top Run-getter

Virat Kohli is the undisputed batting king in the IPL. He is the leading run-scorer in the tournament’s history, collecting 6624 runs in 215 innings. Making his debut at 19 in IPL 2008, Kohli has played every season and is still the vital cog in RCB’s batting department.

In the 2016 season, Kohli became the third Indian cricketer after Sachin Tendulkar and Robin Uthappa to win the Orange Cap. The then RCB skipper amassed 973 runs at a strike rate of 152. Kohli became the first player to make over 900 runs in an IPL season. He remains the only player in the 900+ runs in an IPL season club.

He struck two fifties, including a match-winning 73 against Gujarat Giants in the league stage fixture. RCB fans will want to see the Virat Kohli IPL runs tally reach the 7000-mark in the upcoming season.

The 2016 IPL edition remains Virat Kohli’s great IPL season. The RCB great made 973 runs, which included four centuries and seven half-centuries. He struck two hundreds against Gujarat Lions and one each against Rising Pune Supergiant and Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings). At Chinnaswamy Stadium, Kohli scored three of his four centuries in the 2016 season.

The 113 against Kings XI Punjab is Kohli’s highest score in the league. He and Gayle stitched together a 147-run stand for the opening wicket. Kohli brought up his 50 in 28 balls and added another 63 runs in just 22 balls. It also helped RCB post a mammoth 211 in 15 overs in a rain-affected game at Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Rajasthan Royals wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler equaled Kohli’s record of four IPL centuries in a season in the IPL 2022 edition. But it remains to be seen if the Virat Kohli IPL runs in the 2016 season will ever be overtaken.

Virat Kohli & RCB

The IPL 2023 season will be Virat Kohli’s 16th season in RCB colors. Kohli took over RCB captaincy from Daniel Vettor in the 2013 edition. However, he couldn’t help the franchise lift silverware. RCB reached the final in 2016 but lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight runs.

Kohli resigned from the RCB skipper role at the end of the IPL 2021 season. The franchise retained the swashbuckling batter ahead of the mega auction in 2022, and he is now playing under Faf du Plessis’ captaincy.
